1512 – Abū Jaʿfar Ahmad ibn Yahyā al-Halwānī also narrated to us, saying: al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Saʿdī al-Dhāriʿ—a shaykh who came to us from Basra with Abū al-Rabīʿ al-Zahrānī—narrated to us, saying: ⦗2042⦘ ʿAbd al-Muʾmin ibn ʿAbbād al-ʿAbdī narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Maʿn narrated to me, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Shurahbīl, from Zayd ibn Abī Awfā, who said:

I entered upon the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in his mosque. He asked, “Where is so-and-so, son of so-and-so?” He began looking into the faces of his Companions, checking to see who was absent and sending for them until they had all gathered before him. He then related the hadith concerning the bonds of brotherhood he established among his Companions.

ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “My spirit nearly left me and my back was broken when I saw what you had done for your Companions while leaving me out. If this was because you were displeased with me, then yours is the right to be appeased and honored.”

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—replied, “By Him who sent me with the truth, I held you back only for myself. You hold the same standing in relation to me as Aaron held in relation to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me.” He then related the hadith to its conclusion.
