Muʿāwiya asked him, “What prevented you from going out ⦗2039⦘ with us?” Saʿd replied, “Would I fight a man concerning whom I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say what he said?” He asked, “What did he say?” Saʿd replied, “I heard the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—say to ʿAlī: ‘You hold the same standing in relation to me as Aaron held in relation to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me.’” He asked, “Who else heard this with you?” Saʿd replied, “Umm Salama.” He said, “Had I heard this from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—I would not have fought him.”
