1505 – ʿUmar ibn Ayyūb al-Saqatī also narrated to me, saying: Mahfūz ibn Abī Tawba narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, saying: Maʿmar narrated to us from Qatāda and ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān. They both said: Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib narrated to us, saying: A son of Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqās narrated to us from his father. Saʿīd said: I then went in to see his father and said, “Relate to me ⦗2038⦘ a hadith that I have transmitted on your authority, concerning the time when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appointed ʿAlī over Medina.” Saʿd grew angry and said, “Who told you about it?” I was reluctant to tell him that his son had related it to me, lest he become angry with him. Then he said to me: When the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—set out on the expedition to Tabūk, he appointed ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—over Medina. ʿAlī said, “O Messenger of Allah, I would never wish you to set out anywhere without my being with you.” He replied, “Would you not be pleased to hold the same standing in relation to me as Aaron held in relation to Moses, except that there is no prophet after me?”
