1494 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd also narrated to us: Abbād ibn Yaqub narrated to us: Alī ibn Hāshim informed us, from Abd al-Malik ibn Abī Sulaymān, from Abū Farwa, from ⦗2029⦘ Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abī Laylā, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sent Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—and his companions, but he returned downcast. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Why do I see you retreating in defeat? I shall indeed send against them a man who loves Allah—Glorious and Exalted—and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love. Allah will grant him victory.” The Companions of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then eagerly hoped to be chosen. He looked among the men but did not see Alī among them, so he asked, “Where is Alī?” They replied, “O Messenger of Allah, his eyes are inflamed.” He then said, “Call Alī for me.” Alī was brought to him, being led by another. He lightly spat into his eyes, prayed for his recovery, and gave him the banner. He had already secured victory with the foremost of his companions before the rearmost of them caught up with him.
