1493 — Al-Firyābī narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Hajjāj al-Sāmī narrated to us: Hammād ibn Salama narrated to us, from Suhayl ibn Abī Sālih, from his father, from Abū Hurayra, that ⦗2028⦘ the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said on the day of Khaybar, “I shall certainly place the banner in the hand of a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah will grant him victory.” Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “I never desired leadership except on that day, so I stretched myself upward in hopes of receiving it.” He said: The Prophet then said to Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—“Rise,” and handed him the standard. He then said, “Go, and do not turn around until Allah grants you victory.” Alī walked a short distance, then stopped without turning around, in obedience to the firm command, and asked, “On what grounds am I to fight the people?” The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—replied, “Fight them until they testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. If they say it, their lives and property are protected from you, except where it is due by right, and their reckoning rests with Allah, Glorious and Exalted.”
