1486 — Abū ʿAbd Allah Jaʿfar ibn Idrīs al-Qazwīnī, the muezzin ⦗2013⦘ and imam of the Sacred Mosque, also narrated to us in Mecca, saying: My father, Idrīs ibn Muhammad al-Qazwīnī, narrated to me, saying: Ismāʿīl ibn Tawbah narrated to us, saying: Kathīr ibn Hishām narrated to us, from Jaʿfar ibn Burqān, from Maymūn ibn Mihrān, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
“Rain failed during the time of Abū Bakr al-Siddīq—may Allah be pleased with him. The people gathered before Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—and said, ‘The sky has given no rain, the earth has produced no vegetation, and the people are in severe distress.’
“Abū Bakr al-Siddīq said, ‘Go home and be patient, for you will not reach evening before Allah, Glorious and Majestic, grants you relief.’
“Only a short while passed before the hired men of Uthmān ibn ʿAffān—may Allah be pleased with him—arrived from Syria, and a hundred camels laden with wheat—or, he said, food—were delivered to him. The people gathered at the door of Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—and knocked. Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—came out to them amid a crowd and asked, ‘What do you want?’
“They replied, ‘These are times of drought. The sky gives no rain, the earth produces no vegetation, and the people are in severe distress. We have heard that you have food, so sell it to us and thereby bring relief to the poor Muslims.’
“Uthmān replied, ‘Most gladly! Come in and purchase it.’ The merchants entered and found the food laid out in the house of Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him. He said, ‘O merchants, how much profit will you give me on what I purchased in Syria?’
“They replied, ‘Twelve for every ten.’
“Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—said, ‘I have been offered more.’
“They said, ‘Fourteen for every ten.’
“Uthmān said, ‘I have been offered more.’
“They said, ‘Fifteen for every ten.’
“Uthmān said, ‘I have been offered more.’
“The merchants said, ‘O Abū ʿAmr, no merchants remain in Medina besides us, so who has offered you more?’
“He replied, ‘Allah, Glorious and Majestic, has offered me ten for every dirham. Can you offer more than that?’
“They said, ‘By Allah, no.’
“He said, ‘I call Allah to witness that I have made this food a charity for the poor Muslims.’
“Ibn ʿAbbās—may Allah be pleased with him—then said: That very night, I saw the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—in a dream. He was riding a piebald horse and wearing a garment of light, with sandals of light upon his feet and a staff ⦗2014⦘ of light in his hand. He was in haste, so I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, my longing for you and to hear your words has become intense. Where are you hurrying?’
“He replied, ‘O Ibn ʿAbbās, Uthmān ibn ʿAffān has given a charity, and Allah, Glorious and Majestic, has accepted it from him and, because of it, married him to a bride in Paradise. We have been invited to his wedding.’”
