1478 — Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Baghawī narrated to us, saying: ⦗2008⦘ Abd Allah ibn Mutī narrated to us, saying: Ismāīl ibn Jafar narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Abī Harmala, from Atā and Sulaymān, the two sons of Yasār, and Abū Salama ibn Abd al-Rahmān, that Aisha—may Allah be pleased with her—said:

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was reclining with his legs uncovered. Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—asked permission to enter, and he admitted him while remaining in that state, and they conversed. Then Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—asked permission to enter, and he admitted him while remaining as he was. Then Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—asked permission to enter, whereupon the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sat up, adjusted his garments, and conversed with him.

After he had left, Aisha—may Allah Most High have mercy on her—said, “O Messenger of Allah, Abū Bakr entered and you paid no particular attention to him. Then Umar entered and you paid no particular attention to him. But when Uthmān entered, you sat up and adjusted your garments?” He replied, “Should I not feel modest before a man before whom the angels feel modest?”
