1451 — Abū Muhammad Abd Allah ibn al-Abbās al-Tayālisī narrated to us. He said: Hilāl ibn al-Alā’ al-Raqqī narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us. He said: Ubayd Allah ibn Amr narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Abī Unaysah, from Abū Ishāq, from Abū Abd al-Rahmān al-Sulamī, who said:
When Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—was besieged in his home, the people gathered around it. Uthmān looked down upon them and said, “I call upon any man, by Allah, who heard the Prophet of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—when Mount Hirā’ shook and he said, ‘Stand firm, Hirā’, ⦗1973⦘ for upon you there is none but a prophet, a man of truth, or a martyr.’” Some of those who had heard it said, “We heard him say it.”
He then said, “I adjure you by Allah: Do you know that the Prophet of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, ‘Who will make a contribution toward the Army of Hardship that will be accepted?’ At the time, the people were exhausted and impoverished, and I equipped the army from my own wealth?” They replied, “Yes, by Allah.”
He then said, “I adjure you by Allah: Do you know that no one could drink from the well of Rūmah except by paying, so I purchased it with my own wealth for the poor, the wealthy, the wayfarer, and the people at large?” They replied, “Yes, by Allah,” along with other things he enumerated to them.
