1450 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us. He said: Yūnus ibn Habīb narrated to us. He said: Abū Dāwūd—meaning al-Tayālisī—narrated to us. He said: Abū Awānah narrated to us, from Abū Bishr, from Yūsuf ibn Sa‘d, who said: Muhammad ibn Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—came to Basra and narrated to me, saying: “I saw Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—seated upon a couch, with Ammār ibn Yāsir ⦗1972⦘, Zayd ibn Sūhān, and Sa‘sa‘ah beside him. Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—was mentioned while Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—was tracing the ground with a stick he held. He then recited, ‘Indeed, those for whom the best reward has already been decreed by Us will be kept far away from it’ [al-Anbiyā’: 101]. He said, ‘This was revealed concerning Uthmān.’” I asked Muhammad ibn Alī, “May I narrate this on your authority?” He replied, “Yes.”
