1448 — Abū Ja‘far Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Kūfī al-Ashnānī narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Hamīd ibn Khālid narrated to us: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, from Mis‘ar, who said: Abū Awn al-Thaqafī narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Hātib, who said: Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—was mentioned in the presence of al-Hasan ibn Alī—may Allah be pleased with him. Al-Hasan said, “The Commander of the Faithful, Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—is coming to you now, so ask him about Uthmān.” Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—then arrived, and they asked him about Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him. He recited this verse from al-Mā’idah: “There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds” [al-Mā’idah: 93]. As he came to each clause of the verse, he would say, “Uthmān was among those who ⦗1971⦘ believed; Uthmān was among those who were mindful of Allah.” He then continued reciting until he reached His words—Mighty and Majestic is He—“And Allah loves those who do good” [Āl Imrān: 134].
