1443 — Umar ibn Ayyūb al-Saqatī also narrated to me. He said: Mahfūz ibn Abī Tawbah narrated to us. He said: Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us. He said: Mamar informed us, from Humayd ibn Hilāl, who said: Abd Allah ibn Salām said to them:
“The angels have continued to surround your city ever since the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—entered it ⦗1967⦘, and they remain so to this day. By Allah, if you kill him, they will surely depart and never return. By Allah, no man among you will kill him without meeting Allah with his hand severed, having no hand. The sword of Allah—Glorious and Exalted is He—has remained sheathed from you. By Allah, if you kill him, Allah—Glorious and Exalted is He—will surely draw it, and it will never again be sheathed from you—he either said, ‘ever again,’ or said, ‘until the Day of Resurrection.’ No prophet was ever killed without seventy thousand being killed on his account, and no caliph without thirty-five thousand being killed on his account before they came together.” He also mentioned that seventy thousand were killed in retaliation for the blood of John son of Zechariah.
