1442 — Abū Muhammad ibn Sāid narrated to us. He said: Alī ibn Said ibn Masrūq al-Kindī narrated to us. He said: Abū al-Muhayyāh narrated to us, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from a nephew of Abd Allah ibn Salām, who said: When Uthmān was being targeted, Abd Allah ibn Salām came to him. Uthmān asked him, “What has brought you here?” He replied, “I have come to support you.” He said, “Go out to the people.” Abd Allah went out to the people and said ⦗1966⦘:

“O people, in the Age of Ignorance I had such-and-such a name, but the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—named me Abd Allah. Verses from the Book of Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, were revealed concerning me. Concerning me it was revealed: ‘A witness from the Children of Israel testified to something similar and believed, while you grew arrogant. Indeed, Allah does not guide wrongdoing people’ [al-Ahqāf: 10]. Concerning me it was also revealed: ‘Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you, as is whoever possesses knowledge of the Scripture’ [al-Rad: 43]. Allah has a sword that remains sheathed from you, and the angels have dwelt as your neighbors in this city of yours, where your Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—settled. So fear Allah, fear Allah, concerning this man; do not kill him. By Allah, if you kill him, you will surely drive away your neighbors among the angels, and Allah’s sword that has remained sheathed from you will surely be drawn and will not be sheathed again until the Day of Resurrection.”
