147 — Abū Muhammad ibn Sā‘id also narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Sinān al-Qattān narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Sharīk informed us, from Āsim, from Zirr, from Abdullāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—taught me to recite a surah. I then entered ⦗474⦘ the mosque and asked, “Is there anyone among you who can recite?” A man from the group replied, “I can.” He then recited the surah that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had taught me, but he recited it differently from the way the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—had taught me. The man and I therefore went to the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and found Alī ibn Abī Tālib—may Allah honor his countenance—with him. We said, “O Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—we differ in our recitation.” The countenance of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—changed, whereupon Alī—may Allah honor his countenance—said, “The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—is saying: ‘Those before you perished only because of disagreement. Therefore, let each of you recite what he was taught.’”
