1422 — Qāsim ibn Zakariyyā al-Mutarriz narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn Dihya al-Ziyādī narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, that Abū Uthmān—meaning al-Nahdī—narrated from Abū Mūsā al-Asharī that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—entered a garden and said to me, “Guard ⦗1950⦘ the gate.” A man then came seeking permission to enter, and he said, “Admit him and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” It was Abū Bakr. Then another man came seeking permission to enter, and he said, “Admit him and give him the glad tidings of Paradise.” It was Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him. Then another man came seeking permission to enter. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—paused briefly, then said, “Admit him and give him the glad tidings of Paradise after a severe trial that will befall him.” He said: So I admitted him, and it was Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him.
Hammād said: I also heard Alī ibn al-Hakam and Āsim al-Ahwal say that they had heard Abū Uthmān narrate from Abū Mūsā, from the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—a similar report.
