1404 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī narrated to us: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Muhammad ibn Sallām narrated to us: Shabāba ibn Sawwār narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, from Zayd al-Ammī, who said: When Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, died, the jinn were heard lamenting him and saying:
[Long meter]
May Allah reward you well—what a leader you were!
May Allah’s hand bless that torn hide.
Whoever runs—or mounts an ostrich’s wings—to overtake
what you put forth yesterday will himself be outstripped.

You settled many affairs, then left behind you
mourners whose sleeves had not yet been rent.
Alas for one slain in Medina! For him
the earth grew dark, and the ghadā trees shook upon their trunks.
I never feared that his death would come
at the hands of a brazen, blue-eyed man with drooping lids.
May my Lord greet you in the Gardens with peace
and clothe you in robes of Firdaws that will never tear.
Here ends what I had at hand concerning the virtues of Abū Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both.
