1403 — Abū Zakariyyā Yahyā ibn Muhammad al-Hinnā’ī narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Hisāb narrated to us: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayūb, from Ibn Abī Mulayka, who said: The jinn lamented Umar, may Allah be pleased with him:
[Long meter]
May Allah’s peace be upon you—what a leader you were!
May Allah’s hand bless that torn hide.

You settled many affairs, then left behind you
mourners whose sleeves had not yet been rent.
Whoever runs—or mounts an ostrich’s wings—to overtake
what I put forth yesterday will himself be outstripped.
Alas for one slain in Medina! For him
the earth grew dark, and the ghadā trees shook upon their trunks.
Āsim ibn Bahdala added:
I never feared that his death would come
at the hands of a brazen, blue-eyed man with drooping lids.
