Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

1389 — Abū Ahmad Hārūn ibn Yūsuf narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abī Umar narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, from al-A‘mash and Jāmi ibn Abī Rāshid, from Abū Wā’il, from Hudhayfa ibn al-Yamān, who said:

Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “Who will relate to us what he knows about tribulation?” I said, “I will. I heard him say, ‘A man’s trials concerning his family and wealth are expiated by prayer, charity, and fasting.’” Umar said, “That is not what I am asking you about. I am asking about the tribulation that surges like the waves of the sea.” I said, “Before it stands a closed door: the killing of a man or his death.” He asked, “Will that door be broken or opened?” I replied, “No, it will be broken.” Umar said, “Then it is all the more likely never to be closed again until the Day of Resurrection.”

Al-A‘mash added: We were too much in awe of Hudhayfa to ask him, “Did Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—know that he himself was the door?” So we instructed Masrūq to ask him. He replied, “Yes, just as surely as he knew that tonight precedes tomorrow. That is because I related to him an account stated plainly, not as a riddle.”

1390 — Ibn Abd al-Hamīd narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abī al-Muqri’ narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, from Jāmi ibn Abī Rāshid, from Abū Wā’il, from Hudhayfa, who said:

Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—said, “Who will relate to us what he knows about tribulation?” Hudhayfa replied, “I will,” and he related the hadith exactly as above.
