1388 — Abū Bakr Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hamīd al-Wāsitī narrated to us, saying: Hārūn ibn Abd Allāh al-Bazzāz narrated to us, saying: Sayyār ibn Hātim narrated to us, saying: Ja‘far ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: al-Mu‘allā ibn Ziyād narrated to us, from al-Hasan, who said:

While Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—was holding the hand of Abū Dharr—may Allah be pleased with him—he squeezed it. Abū Dharr said to him, “Stop, O lock of Islam! You have hurt me.” Umar asked, “What do you mean, Abū Dharr?” He replied, “Commander of the Faithful, do you remember such-and-such a day?” He was reminding him of the occasion when Umar approached and looked down over the valley, whereupon the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “No tribulation will afflict you so long as this man remains among you.” Thus, Umar, you are the lock of Islam.”
