1387 — Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad al-Baghawī narrated to us, saying: Dāwūd ibn Amr narrated to us, saying: Mukram ibn Hakīm narrated to us, from Abū Muhammad, from al-Hasan, from Anas ibn Mālik, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was in a house when some women of Quraysh entered and began asking him questions and seeking information from him, raising their voices above his. Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—then arrived and sought permission to enter. When they heard Umar’s voice, they hurried behind the curtain. Umar was admitted, and when he entered, the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—burst into laughter. Umar said, “May Allah always keep you smiling, O Prophet of Allah! What made you laugh?” He replied, “Some women of Quraysh entered and began asking me questions and seeking information from me, raising their voices above mine. Yet when they heard your voice, they hurried behind the curtains—or the curtain.” Then ⦗1910⦘ Umar said, “You enemies of yourselves! Do you fear me while daring to behave this way toward the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace?” One of them replied, “You are harsher and sterner.” The Prophet of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “Enough! Leave Umar alone. By Allah, Umar has never taken a valley that Satan then followed.”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: We have already cited in this book the statement of Ibn Masūd: “Umar’s acceptance of Islam was a source of strength, his emigration was a victory, and his caliphate was a mercy. By Allah, we were unable to pray openly until Umar embraced Islam. I indeed believe that Satan is frightened by even the sound of Umar—may Allah be pleased with him….” And he related the hadith.
