1363 — Abū Saīd Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyād al-Arābī narrated to us, saying ⦗1890⦘: Abd al-Karīm ibn al-Haytham narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Sālih al-Misrī narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Yahyā ibn Ayyūb, from Muhammad ibn Ajlān, from Nāfi, from Ibn Umar, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—“dispatched an army and appointed over them a man called Sāriya. He said: While Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—was addressing the people, he began shouting, ‘Sāriya, take to the mountain! Sāriya, take to the mountain!’—three times.

“Then the army’s messenger arrived, and Umar questioned him. He replied, ‘Commander of the Faithful, we were routed. While we were in that state, we suddenly heard a voice shouting, “Sāriya, take to the mountain! Sāriya, take to the mountain! Sāriya, take to the mountain!” We then braced our backs against the mountain, and Allah—glorified and exalted—defeated them.’ Umar was then told, ‘You were indeed shouting those very words.’”

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said: This indicates that an angel spoke through Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—just as Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “Indeed, tranquility speaks through Umar’s tongue.” May Allah be pleased with them all, as brothers upon couches facing one another.
