1360 — Abū Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyād al-Naysābūrī informed us, saying: Yūnus ibn Abd al-Aʿlā narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Yahyā ibn Ayyūb informed me, from Muhammad ibn Ajlān, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn Umar, that Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—“dispatched an army and appointed over them a man called Sāriya. He said: One day, while Umar ibn al-Khattāb was addressing the people, he began shouting from the pulpit, ‘Sāriya, take to the mountain! ⦗1889⦘ Sāriya, take to the mountain!’—twice.
“When the army’s messenger arrived, Umar questioned him. He replied, ‘Commander of the Faithful, we encountered our enemy and they routed us. Suddenly, we heard someone shouting, “Sāriya, take to the mountain! Sāriya, take to the mountain!” We then braced our backs against the mountain, and Allah—glorified and exalted—defeated them.’ Umar was then told, ‘You were indeed shouting those very words.’”
1361 — Ibn Ajlān said: Iyās ibn Muʿāwiya also narrated the same to me.
1362 — Abū Bakr al-Naysābūrī said: Muhammad ibn Yahyā narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Īsā ibn al-Tabbāʿ narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated the same report with his chain of transmission.
