1302 — Abū Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attār informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Hārūn al-Fallās narrated to us, saying: Abū Salama Mūsā ibn Ismāīl narrated to us, saying: Abū Idrīs al-Hārithī, Talīd ibn Sulaymān, narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Jahhāf said: Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—kept himself apart from the people for three days. Each day, he would appear before them and say, “I hereby release you from your pledge of allegiance to me, so pledge allegiance to whomever you wish.” He said: Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—would then stand and say, “By Allah, we will neither release you nor seek release from you. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—put you forward, so who could set you back?”
