12 — Ibn ‘Abd al-Hamīd also informed us, saying: Zuhayr ibn Muhammad al-Marwazī narrated to us, saying: Sulaymān ibn Harb informed us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from ‘Āsim ibn Bahdala, from Abū Wā’il, from ‘Abd Allah, who said: One day, the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—drew a line, tracing it on the ground with his finger, and said, “This is Allah’s path.” Then he drew lines to the right and left of the line and said, “These are paths. On every one of them ⦗293⦘ is a devil calling people to it.” He then recited: “And indeed, this is My straight path, so follow it, and do not follow other paths” [al-An‘ām 6:153]—the lines to its right and left—“lest they lead you away from His path. This is what He has enjoined upon you, so that you may be mindful of Him.”
