1260 – Abū Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Shāhīn narrated to us; he said: ⦗1801⦘ Ismā‘īl ibn Ubayd ibn Abī Karīma al-Harrānī narrated to us; he said: Muhammad ibn Salama narrated to us, from Abū Abd al-Rahīm, from Abū Abd al-Malik, from al-Qāsim, from Abū Umāma, who said:
There had been some mutual reproach between a man of the Ansār and Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him. Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—apologized to him, but the man refused to accept his apology. When news of this reached the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—he became deeply upset. When the Prophet went out later that day, the man came and sat beside the Prophet of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—but he turned away from him. The man then rose and sat to his left, but he again turned away from him. He then rose and sat directly before him, but he still turned away from him.
The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, I can see that you are turning away from me. I know that you are doing so because of something you have heard about me or because you are displeased with me. What good is my worldly life if you turn away from me? By the One who sent you with the truth, I care nothing for living even one hour in this world while you are displeased.”
The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said, “You are the one to whom Abū Bakr first offered an apology, yet you refused to accept it from him. Indeed, Allah—Mighty and Majestic—sent me to all of you, and you said, ‘You are lying,’ while my companion said, ‘You have spoken the truth.’” He then said, “Will you leave my companion and me alone? Will you leave my companion and me alone? Will you leave my companion and me alone?”
