1246 – Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allāh ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Azīz al-Baghawī narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Humayd al-Rāzī narrated to us: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Mughr narrated to us, from Mujālid, from al-Sha'bī, who said: I asked Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—“Who was the first to embrace Islam?” He replied, “Abū Bakr al-Siddīq—may Allah be pleased with him.” He then said, “Have you not heard the words of Hassān ibn Thābit—may Allah be pleased with him?”

“When sorrow for a trusted brother comes to mind,
remember your brother Abū Bakr and what he did.
Creation’s best, its most God-fearing and most just—
after the Prophet—and worthiest of the burden he bore.
The second, the follower, whose presence was praiseworthy,
and of all people, the first to affirm the Messenger’s truth.”
