1238—Abū Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attār narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ⦗1780⦘ ibn Abī al-Hārith narrated to us at Bāb al-Shām, saying: Ubayd ibn Ishāq narrated to us, saying: Sayf ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Sa'd ibn Tarīf narrated to me, from al-Asbagh ibn Nubāta, who said: Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—said: “Indeed, it was I who urged Umar—may Allah have mercy on him and be pleased with him—to perform the night prayer during Ramadan. I informed him that above the seventh heaven is an enclosure known as the Hallowed Enclosure. Within it is a host known as ‘the Spirit.’ When the Night of Decree arrives, they seek permission from their Lord—Mighty and Majestic—to descend to this world. They never pass by anyone who is praying, nor encounter anyone on a road, without that person receiving some of the blessing.” He said: “Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—then said, ‘In that case, by Allah, O Abū al-Hasan, we shall place the people in the path of that blessing.’ He therefore ordered them to perform the night prayer.”
