1233—Thus Abū Ja'far Ahmad ibn Yahyā al-Hulwānī narrated to us, saying: Ubayd ibn Jinād al-Halabī narrated to us, saying: Atā ibn Muslim narrated to us, from Sālih al-Murādī, from Abd Khayr, who said: I saw Alī—may Allah be pleased with him—perform the afternoon prayer, while the people of Najrān were lined up before him in two rows. When he had finished praying, one of them gestured, produced a document, and handed it to him. When he read it, his eyes filled with tears. He then raised his head toward them and said, “O people of Najrān—or, O my companions—by Allah, this is my handwriting, written with my own hand at the dictation of the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him.” They said, “O Commander of the Believers, grant us what it stipulates.” I drew nearer to him and said, “If he is ever going to overturn a decision of Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—today is the day he will do so.” He replied, “Today I will not overturn anything Umar did. Umar was a man of sound judgment. What Umar took from you was better than what he gave you in return, and Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—did not assign what he took from you to himself; he assigned it only to the Muslim community as a whole.”
