1221 — Abū Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attār also related to us: Abū Bakr Muhammad ibn Khalaf reported to us: Muhammad ibn Kathīr reported to us: Al-Hārith ibn Husayra reported to us, from Abū Dāwūd, from Imrān ibn Husayn, who said: I was sitting with the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—with Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—beside him, when the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—recited this verse: “Who answers the distressed when he calls upon Him, removes adversity, and makes you inheritors of the earth?” [al-Naml: 62]
Ali—may Allah be pleased with him—began to tremble, so the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—took hold of him and asked, “What is the matter, Ali?”
He replied, “Messenger of Allah, you recited this verse, and I feared that I might be tested through it. I could not control myself, ⦗1766⦘ and what you saw came over me.”
The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, none but a believer will love you, and none but a hypocrite will hate you, until the Day of Resurrection.”
Ibn Makhlad said: Abū Bakr Muhammad ibn Khalaf informed us: Jafar al-Tayālisī came to me and asked me about this hadith.
