1215 โ Abลซ Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Wฤsitฤซ reported to us: Abลซ Bakr al-Athram reported to us: Ahmad ibn Hanbal said to me, โWrite down this hadith, for it is a good hadith concerning the caliphate of Alฤซ ibn Abฤซ Tฤlibโmay Allah be pleased with him.โ He then said: Ishฤq ibn Yลซsuf al-Azraq reported to us: Abd al-Malik reported to us, from Salama ibn Kuhayl, from Sฤlim ibn Abฤซ al-Jad, from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyya, who said:
I was with Alฤซ ibn Abฤซ Tฤlibโmay Allah be pleased with himโwhile Uthmฤnโmay Allah be pleased with himโwas under siege. A man came to him and said, โThe Commander of the Faithful is about to be killed this very moment!โ Alฤซโmay Allah be pleased with himโstood up, and I grasped him around the waist, fearing for his safety. He said, โLet go of meโmay you be motherless!โ
Alฤซ ibn Abฤซ Tฤlibโmay Allah be pleased with himโwent to the house, but Uthmฤnโmay Allah be pleased with himโhad already been killed. He then returned to his own house, entered it, and locked the door behind him. The people came and pounded on his door, then entered and said, โUthmฤn has been killed, and the people must have a caliph. We know of no one with a greater right to it than you.โ
Alฤซโmay Allah be pleased with himโsaid to them, โDo not press me further. It is better that I be your adviser than your ruler.โ They replied, โNo! By Allah, we know of no one with a greater right to it than you.โ He said, โIf you insist, my pledge of allegiance shall not be given in secret. Rather, I shall go out to the mosque, and whoever wishes to pledge allegiance to me may do so.โ He then went out to the mosque, and the people pledged allegiance to him.

1216 โ Ibn Abd al-Hamฤซd also reported to us: Abลซ Yahyฤ al-Attฤr reported to us: Ishฤq ibn Yลซsuf al-Azraq reported to us . . . and he related the same hadith with its chain of transmission.
Muhammad ibn al-Husaynโmay Allah have mercy upon himโsaid: This is our position concerning Alฤซ ibn Abฤซ Tฤlibโmay Allah be pleased with him: he was the fourth caliph, as the Prophetโmay Allah bless him and grant him peaceโsaid, โThe caliphate will last thirty years.โ
It has also been related from Hudhayfa that the Prophetโmay Allah bless him and grant him peaceโsaid, โIf you entrust it to Abลซ Bakr, he is detached from this world and desirous of the Hereafter. If you entrust it to Umar, he is strong and trustworthy, and no reproach deters him in matters concerning Allah. If you entrust it to Alฤซ, he will guide others and is himself rightly guided; he will keep you upon a straight path.โ
Muhammad ibn al-Husaynโmay Allah have mercy upon himโsaid: As Hudhayfa related, Alฤซโmay Allah be pleased with himโremained upon the straight path from the time he was raised in the company of the Prophetโmay Allah bless him and grant him peaceโuntil the Prophetโmay Allah bless him and grant him peaceโpassed away. He then pledged allegiance to Abลซ Bakrโmay Allah be pleased with himโand remained upon the straight path. When Abลซ Bakrโmay Allah be pleased with himโpassed away, he pledged allegiance to Umarโmay Allah be pleased with both of themโand remained with him upon the straight path. When Umarโmay Allah be pleased with himโpassed away, he pledged allegiance to Uthmฤn ibn Affฤnโmay Allah be pleased with himโand remained with him upon the straight path.
When Uthmฤnโmay Allah be pleased with himโwas unjustly killed, Allah cleared Alฤซ of involvement in his killing, and Alฤซ regarded his killing as a manifest injustice. He then assumed the caliphate after themโmay Allah be pleased with himโand, praise be to Allah, remained upon the straight path: following the Book of Allahโmighty and majesticโfollowing the practices of the Messenger of Allahโmay Allah bless him and grant him peaceโand following the precedent of Abลซ Bakr, Umar, and Uthmฤnโmay Allah โฆ1762โฆ be pleased with them. He neither changed nor altered their practice. He was detached from this world and desirous of the Hereafter, humble in himself yet exalted in the sight of Allahโmighty and majesticโand in the sight of the believers, until he was slain as a martyr. May Allah curse his killer and disgrace him in this world and the Hereafter.
