1214 — Abū Zakariyyā Yahyā ibn Muhammad ibn al-Bakhtarī al-Hinnā’ī informed us, saying ⦗1755⦘: Muhammad ibn Ubayd ibn Hisāb narrated to us: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn al-Mukhtār, from Āsim ibn Abī al-Najūd, from Abū Wā’il, who said:

“Abd Allah ibn Masūd came to us and announced the death of Umar—may Allah be pleased with him. I had never seen anyone on any day who wept or grieved more than he did. Abd Allah then said, ‘By Him in whose hand is my soul, had I known that Umar loved even a dog, I would have loved it. We, the Companions of Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—were unanimous and pledged allegiance to Uthmān. We were not remiss in choosing the best and most excellent among us—one as complete as a well-notched arrow.’”
