Al-Shariah li-al-AjurriAl-Ajurri

1193 — Abū Sa‘īd Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyād al-A‘rābī narrated to us, saying: Ibrāhīm ibn Fahd narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Khālid al-Wāsitī narrated to us, saying: Sharīk narrated to us, from Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī, from al-Hasan, who said: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) appointed Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer, even though he knew I was there and I was neither absent nor ill. Had he wished to appoint me, he would have done so. We therefore chose for our worldly affairs the man whom the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had chosen for our religion.”
