1192 — Abū Muhammad Abd Allah ibn al-Abbās al-Tayālisī narrated to us, saying: Hilāl ibn al-Alā al-Raqqī narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: Ishāq al-Azraq narrated to us, saying: Abū Sinān narrated to us, from al-Dahhāk ibn Muzāhim, from al-Nazzāl ibn Sabra al-Hilālī, who said: One day, we happened to find Ali ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah honor his countenance) in good spirits and disposed to jest. We said, “O Commander of the Faithful, tell us about your companions.” He replied, “All the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) are my companions.” We said, “Tell us specifically about your own companions.” He replied, “There was no companion of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) who was not also a companion of mine.” We said, “Tell us about Abū Bakr.” He replied, “He is a man whom Allah, Glorious and Exalted, named al-Siddīq (the Utterly Truthful) through Gabriel (peace be upon him) and Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He was ⦗1722⦘ the successor to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). The Messenger chose him to lead us in our religion, so we chose him to lead us in our worldly affairs.” . . . . . . And he related the hadith.
