1191 — Abū Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Makhlad al-Attār informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Hārūn al-Fallās narrated to us, saying: Abū Salama Mūsā ibn Ismāīl narrated to us, saying: Abū Idrīs Talīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Jahhāf narrated to us, saying: Abū Bakr (may Allah ⦗1721⦘ be pleased with him) withdrew from public view for three days. Each day, he would look out upon the people and say: “I have released you from your pledge of allegiance to me, so pledge allegiance to whomever you wish.” He said: Ali ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) would then stand and say: “No, by Allah! We will neither release you nor ask you to release us. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) put you forward, so who could set you back?”
