1190 — And Abū Hafs Umar ibn Ayyūb al-Saqatī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ⦗1720⦘ ibn Muāwiya ibn Mālij narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Hāshim narrated to us, from his father, from Abū al-Jahhāf, who said: After allegiance had been pledged to Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions had pledged allegiance to him, Abū Bakr stood before the people each day for three days, saying: “O people, I have released you from your pledge of allegiance. Does anyone object?” Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) would then be among the first to stand and say: “No, by Allah! We will neither release you nor ask you to release us. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) put you forward, so who could set you back?”
