1189 — And Ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Ayyūb ibn Muhammad al-Wazzān narrated to us, saying: Marwān narrated to us, saying: Musāwir al-Warrāq narrated to us, from Amr ibn Sufyān, who said: Ali ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) addressed us ⦗1719⦘ on the Day of the Camel and said: “To proceed: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) left us no directive concerning leadership that we might follow his command. Rather, we reached our own judgment concerning it. Abū Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) was appointed caliph, and he governed and remained upright. Then Umar was appointed caliph, and he governed and remained upright.”
