1181 — Abū Bakr Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hamīd ⦗1707⦘ al-Wāsitī narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Rizq Allah al-Kalwadhānī narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn Sālih narrated to us, saying: Al-Layth ibn Sad narrated to me, saying: Khālid ibn Yazīd narrated to me, saying: Saīd ibn Abī Hilāl narrated to me, from Rabīah ibn Sayf, from Shufayy ibn Māti, who said: I heard Abd Allah ibn Amr ibn al-Ās say: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: “There will surely be twelve caliphs from among you. Abū Bakr al-Siddīq will remain after me for only a short while, while the pivot around whom the Arabs revolve will live an honorable life and die a martyr.” A man asked, “Who is he, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Umar ibn al-Khattāb.” He then turned to Uthmān ibn Affān and said, “People will ask you to remove a shirt with which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has clothed you. By Him Who sent me with the truth, if you remove it, you will not enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of the needle.”
A man from among his people said, “Why should we concern ourselves with this? We sat with you only so that you might give us a reminder.” He replied, “Had you only let me continue, I would have told you what he said about each of them, one by one.”
