1070 – Abū Muhammad ibn Sāid also narrated to us, saying: Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan al-Marwazī narrated to us, saying: Abd Allah ibn al-Mubārak informed us, saying: Al-Mubārak ibn Fadāla informed us, from al-Hasan, who said: Anas ibn Mālik told me that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would deliver the Friday sermon with his back resting against a piece of wood. When the people grew numerous, he said, “Build me a pulpit.” They built him a pulpit consisting of only two steps. When he moved from the wood to the pulpit, by Allah, the wood cried with the yearning cry of a bereaved mother. Anas said, “By Allah, I was in this very mosque and heard it. By Allah, it continued crying until the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—descended from the pulpit, walked over to it, and embraced it, whereupon it fell silent.” Al-Hasan wept and said, “O Muslims, a piece of wood yearns for the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—⦗1586⦘ so are not the men who hope to meet him even more entitled to yearn for him?”
