1060 — Abū al-Qāsim Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Azīz al-Baghawī ⦗1575⦘ narrated to us, saying: Ubayd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Ayshī narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Azīz ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Abī Mansūr narrated to us, from his father, from Abū Hurayra, who said:

“I was afflicted by three calamities: the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whose devoted companion and humble attendant I had been; the killing of Uthmān—may Allah have mercy on him; and the provision bag. And what was the story of the provision bag?”

They asked, “O Abū Hurayra, what was the provision bag?”

He replied, “We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when the people were stricken by severe hunger. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me, ‘O Abū Hurayra, do you have anything?’

“I replied, ‘Yes, a few dates in a provision bag.’

“He said, ‘Bring it to me.’

“So I brought it to him. He put his hand inside, took out a handful, and spread the dates out. He then said, ‘Call ten men for me.’

“I called ten men, and they ate until they were full. He then put his hand inside, took out another handful, and spread the dates out. He said, ‘Call ten men for me.’

“I called ten men, and they ate until they were full. He continued ⦗1576⦘ doing this until the entire army had eaten and was satisfied. Then he said to me, ‘Take what you brought. Put your hand inside and grasp it, but do not tip the bag over.’

“Abū Hurayra said, ‘I scooped up more than I had originally brought.’ Abū Hurayra then said, ‘Shall I tell you how long I ate from it? I ate from it throughout the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I fed others from it. I ate from it throughout the lifetime of Abū Bakr—may Allah be pleased with him—and fed others from it; throughout the lifetime of Umar—may Allah be pleased with him—and fed others from it; and throughout the lifetime of Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—and fed others from it. When Uthmān—may Allah be pleased with him—was killed, my belongings were plundered and the provision bag was lost.’”
