1053 — Abū Muhammad Jafar ibn Ahmad ibn Asim al-Dimashqī narrated to us, saying: Hishām ibn Ammār narrated to us, saying: al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: al-Awzā'ī narrated to us, on the authority of al-Muttalib ibn Abd Allāh ibn Hantab al-Makhzūmī, on the authority of Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abū Amra al-Ansārī, on the authority of his father, who said:
“We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition when the people were afflicted by severe hunger. They sought the Messenger of Allah’s (peace and blessings be upon him) permission to slaughter some of their mounts, saying, ‘Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will see us through by means of them.’ Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘What will become of us if we encounter our enemy on foot? Rather, O Messenger of Allah, if you deem it fitting, call upon the people to bring the remainder of their provisions, gather them together, and then pray over them ⦗1568⦘ for blessing. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will surely see us through by your supplication—or bless them for us through your supplication.’
“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) therefore called upon them to bring the remainder of their provisions. They brought them, each man coming with a handful of food or more. The largest amount anyone brought was a sā' of dates. He gathered it all upon a leather mat, then called upon the people to bring their vessels. Not a single vessel in the army remained without his filling it, and an equal amount was still left. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed until his molars became visible, and he said, ‘I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify that I am the Messenger of Allah. I testify before Allah, Mighty and Majestic, that no servant shall meet Allah, Mighty and Majestic, believing in both without the two shielding him from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.’”
