9 — And Abū Bakr Abd Allah ibn Abī Dāwūd al-Sijistānī informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bashshār and Muhammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us that Muhammad ibn Ja‘far had narrated to them, from Shu‘ba, from Ghaylān ibn Jarīr, from Ziyād ibn Riyāh, from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him—said: “Whoever separates from the Community and defies obedience dies a death of pre-Islamic ignorance. Whoever assails my community, both the righteous and the wicked among them, neither holding back out of regard for any believer among them nor honoring its covenant with those under its protection, is not of my community. Whoever is killed under a banner of blind partisanship—becoming angry out of partisan zeal, fighting out of partisan zeal, calling people to support a faction of his own, and showing loyalty to a faction—dies a death of pre-Islamic ignorance.” This is the wording of Abū Mūsā’s narration.
