1029 — Abū Muslim Ibrāhīm ibn Abd Allah al-Kashshī informed us, saying: Ali ibn Abd Allah al-Madīnī narrated to us, saying: Safwān ibn Īsā narrated to us, saying: Awf narrated to us, saying: Zurāra ibn Awfā narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abbās—may Allah be pleased with them both—narrated to us, saying: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:
“After I had been taken on the Night Journey that night, morning found me in Mecca. I felt distressed by my situation ⦗1537⦘ and knew that the people would call me a liar, so I sat apart, grieving. Then Allah’s enemy Abū Jahl passed by me. He came over and sat beside me, then asked mockingly, ‘Is there anything?’
“I replied, ‘Yes.’
“He asked, ‘What is it?’
“I said, ‘I was taken on the Night Journey last night.’
“He asked, ‘To where?’
“I replied, ‘To Jerusalem.’
“Abū Jahl asked, ‘And then morning found you here among us?’
“I replied, ‘Yes.’
“He did not show me that he considered me a liar, fearing that I might deny having said it. He then asked, ‘If I summon your people, will you tell them the same thing you have told me?’
“I replied, ‘Yes.’
“Abū Jahl called out, ‘O clan of Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy, come to me!’ The people rose from their gatherings and came over, then sat down around the two of us. Abū Jahl said to me, ‘Tell your people what you told me.’
“I said, ‘I was taken on the Night Journey last night.’
“They asked, ‘To where?’
“I replied, ‘To Jerusalem.’
“They asked, ‘And then morning found you here among us?’
“I replied, ‘Yes.’
“At that, some began clapping, while others placed their hands on their heads in astonishment at the alleged lie. The people then asked, ‘Can you describe the mosque to us?’ ⦗1538⦘ Among them were men who had traveled to that land and had seen the mosque.
“I began to describe it and went on describing it until some of its features became unclear to me. The mosque was then brought into my view and set before the house of Aqīl, and I continued looking at it. The people said, ‘As for the description, you have got it right.’”
