1026 — Abū Bakr Jafar ibn Muhammad al-Firyābī narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Khālid ibn Mawhab al-Ramlī narrated to us, saying: Abdullāh ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying: Yūnus ibn Yazīd narrated to us, from Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī, from Anas ibn Mālik, who said: Abū Dharr used to relate that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said:

“While I was in Mecca, the roof of my house was opened. Gabriel—peace be upon him—descended and opened my chest. He then washed it with Zamzam water. Next, he brought a gold basin filled with wisdom and faith together, poured its contents into my chest, and then closed it. He took me by the hand and ascended with me to heaven.

“When he reached the lowest heaven, Gabriel said to its keeper, ‘Open.’ He asked, ‘Who is this?’ Gabriel replied, ‘Gabriel.’ He asked, ‘Is anyone with you?’ He replied, ‘Yes, Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’ He asked, ‘Has he been summoned?’ Gabriel replied, ‘Yes, so open it.’ Then he opened it.

“When we ascended into the lowest heaven, there was a man with figures to his right and figures to his left. Whenever he looked to his right, he laughed, and whenever he looked to his left, he wept. He said, ‘Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son.’ I asked, ‘Gabriel, who is this?’ He replied, ‘This is Adam. These figures to his right and left ⦗1528⦘ are the souls of his descendants. Those on his right are the people of Paradise, while the figures on his left are the people of the Fire. Thus, whenever he looks to his right, he laughs, and whenever he looks to his left, he weeps.’

“He continued: ‘Gabriel—peace be upon him—then ascended with me until we reached the second heaven. He said to its keeper, “Open.” He opened it, and its keeper asked him the same questions as the keeper of the lowest heaven had asked. Then he opened it.’”

Anas said: He mentioned that he encountered Adam, Idrīs, Jesus, Moses, and Abraham—may blessings and peace be upon them—in the heavens. He did not specify their respective stations, except that he mentioned encountering Adam in the lowest heaven and Abraham in the sixth.

He said: When Gabriel and the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—passed by Idrīs—peace be upon him—he said, “Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother.” The Messenger said: “Then I moved on and asked, ‘Who is this?’ Gabriel replied, ‘This is Idrīs.’ He continued: ‘Then I passed by Moses, who said, “Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother.” I asked, “Who is this?” Gabriel replied, “This is Moses.” Then I passed by Jesus, who said, “Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother.” I asked, “Who is this?” Gabriel replied, “This is Jesus.” Then I passed by Abraham—peace be upon him—who said, “Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son.” I asked, “Who is this?” Gabriel replied, “This is Abraham.”’”

Ibn Shihāb said: Ibn Hazm informed me that Ibn Abbās and Abū Habba al-Ansārī used to say that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “I was then raised until I reached ⦗1529⦘ the level of the Throne.”

Ibn Hazm and Anas ibn Mālik said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “Allah, Majestic and Exalted, prescribed fifty prayers for my nation.” He continued: “I returned with that until I passed by Moses—peace be upon him. Moses asked, ‘What has your Lord prescribed for your nation?’ I replied, ‘He has prescribed fifty prayers for them.’ Moses said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your nation will not be able to bear that.’ I therefore returned to my Lord, Majestic and Exalted, and He removed half of them.

“I went back to Moses and informed him. He said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your nation will not be able to bear that.’ I therefore returned to my Lord, Majestic and Exalted, and He said, ‘They are five, and they are fifty. My word cannot be changed.’ [Qāf: 29]

“I returned to Moses, and he said, ‘Go back to your Lord.’ I replied, ‘I have grown ashamed before my Lord, Majestic and Exalted.’ He then took me onward until he brought me to the Lote Tree at the Utmost Boundary. It was enveloped by colors whose nature I do not know. Then I was admitted into Paradise, where I saw domes of pearl and found that its soil was musk.”
