1003 — Abū Muhammad Abd Allāh ibn Sālih al-Bukhārī also informed us, saying: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Bishr ibn al-Hakam narrated to us, saying: ⦗1480⦘ Alī ibn al-Husayn ibn Wāqid narrated to me, saying: My father narrated to me, saying: Thābit narrated to me, saying: Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal al-Muzanī narrated to me, saying:

We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Hudaybiya, beneath the tree that Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, mentioned in the Quran. I can still picture one of its branches resting on the back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I lifted it from his back. Alī ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Suhayl ibn Amr were seated before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Alī, “Write: ‘In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.’” Suhayl ibn Amr took hold of his hand and said, “We do not recognize ‘the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.’ Write in our agreement what we recognize.”

He then said, “Write: ‘In Your name, O Allah. These are the terms of the truce concluded by Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, with the people of Mecca.’” Suhayl again took hold of his hand and said, “If you are His Messenger, then we have certainly wronged you. Write in your agreement what we recognize.”

He said, “Write: ‘These are the terms of the truce concluded by Muhammad ibn Abd Allāh ibn Abd al-Muttalib’—and I am the Messenger of Allah.”

While we were thus engaged, thirty armed young men suddenly came out against us and charged straight at us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) invoked Allah against them, and Allah Most High took away their sight. We went up to them and captured them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked them, “Did you come under anyone’s covenant? Has anyone granted you safe-conduct?”

They replied, “By Allah, no.” He therefore let them go. Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, then revealed:

“It is He who withheld their hands from you and your hands from them ⦗1481⦘ within Mecca after giving you victory over them. And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.” [al-Fath 48:24]
