978 — Ibrāhīm ibn Mūsā al-Jawzī informed us, saying: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā al-Qattān narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Malik ibn Hārūn ibn Antarah narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn Abbās, who said:

“The Jews of Khaybar used to fight Ghatafān, and whenever the two sides met, the Jews were defeated. The Jews therefore sought refuge in this supplication, saying, ‘O Allah, we ask You by the right of Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet ⦗1453⦘ whom You promised us You would bring forth for us at the end of time, to grant us victory over them!’ He said: Whenever they met in battle, they would make this supplication, and they defeated Ghatafān. Yet when the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—was sent, they disbelieved in him. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, therefore revealed:

‘Before this, they used to seek victory over those who disbelieved, but when there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So may Allah’s curse be upon the disbelievers.’ [al-Baqarah: 89]”
