970 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahyā ibn Fāris and Khushaysh ibn Asram narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us, from Mamar, from al-Zuhrī, who said: Abū Salama ibn Abd al-Rahmān informed me, from Jābir ibn Abd Allah, who said: I heard the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—speak about the pause in revelation. He said in his account:
“While I was walking, I heard a voice from the sky. I raised my head and there was the angel who had come to me at Hirā, seated upon a throne between heaven and earth. I was overcome with terror at the sight of him, so I returned and said, ‘Wrap me up! Wrap me up! Cloak me! Cloak me!’ Then Allah, mighty and majestic, revealed: ‘O you who are cloaked! Arise and warn. Magnify your Lord. Purify your garments. Shun the idols’ [al-Muddaththir: 2]. The ‘defilement’ meant the idols. This was before prayer was made obligatory.”
