963 — And Abū Bakr Qāsim ibn Zakariyyā al-Mutarriz narrated to us: Abd Allah ibn ⦗1427⦘ Shabīb al-Makkī narrated to us: Ahmad ibn Muhammad narrated to me, saying: I found in my father’s book, from al-Zuhrī, from Ibrāhīm ibn Abd al-Rahmān ibn Awf, from his father, Abd al-Rahmān ibn Awf, who said, “I was the same age as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
Abd al-Rahmān said: My mother informed me, saying:
“When Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was born, he was delivered into my hands and cried out. I then heard a voice from the direction of the house say, ‘May your Lord have mercy on you.’ After I had gently tended to him and laid him down, a light shone before me until I saw the palaces of the Romans. Then darkness and trembling overtook me. I looked to my right but saw nothing, and I heard a voice say, ‘Where did you take him?’ Another replied, ‘She took him to the west.’
“Then trembling and darkness came upon me once more. I looked to my left but saw nothing, and I heard a voice say, ‘Where did she take him?’ Another replied, ‘She took him to the east.’”
Abd al-Rahmān said, “This account stayed with me until Allah, mighty and majestic, sent His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.” He was thus the first of his people to embrace Islam.
Muhammad ibn al-Husayn, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
There are hadiths concerning this chapter that I have cited in my book on his virtues—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
