956 — Abū Bakr ibn Abī Dāwūd narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Hārith al-Fihrī narrated to us, saying: Said ibn Amr narrated to me, saying: Abū Abd al-Rahmān ibn Abd Allāh ibn Ismāīl ibn Bint Abī Maryam narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Rahmān ibn Zayd ibn Aslam narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Umar ibn al-Khattāb—may Allah be pleased with him—who said:

“When Adam—peace be upon him—committed the sin that he committed, he raised his head toward heaven and said, ‘I ask You, by Muhammad’s right, to forgive me.’ Allah, Glorious and Exalted, then revealed to him, ‘What is Muhammad, and who is Muhammad?’ He replied, ‘Blessed is Your Name! When You created me, I raised my head toward Your Throne and saw inscribed upon it: “There is no deity except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” I therefore knew that no one could be greater in rank with You than one whose name You placed alongside Your Name.’ Allah, Glorious and Exalted, then revealed to him, ‘O Adam, by My might and majesty, he is indeed the last of the prophets from among your descendants. Were it not for him, I would not have created you.’” ⦗1416⦘

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn—may Allah have mercy on him—said: It has also been narrated from Ibn Abbās that he said: “Allah has created, fashioned, or brought into being no one more honored in His sight than Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him. I have never heard Allah, Glorious and Exalted, swear by the life of anyone other than Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—as in His words: ‘By your life! Indeed, they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly’ [al-Hijr: 72].” He explained that it means: “By your life, O Muhammad! Indeed, they were, in their intoxication, wandering blindly” [al-Hijr: 72]. And Allah knows best.
