Chapter: Warning Against Groups Who Oppose the Sunnahs of the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—by Invoking the Book of Allah Most High, and the Severe Condemnation of This Class

Muhammad ibn al-Husayn said:

When people of knowledge and reason hear someone say, concerning a matter firmly established among the scholars, “The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said...,” and an ignorant person objects, saying, “I accept only what is found in the Book of Allah Most High,” he should be told: “You are a wicked man. You are among those against whom the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—warned us and against whom the scholars warned us.”

He should also be told: “You ignorant man! Allah revealed His obligations in general terms and commanded His Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—to explain to people what had been revealed to them. Allah—Glorified and Exalted is He—said:

“We have sent down to you the Reminder so that you may explain to people what has been sent down to them, and so that they may reflect.” [al-Nahl: 44]

Thus, Allah Most High appointed His Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—to explain on His behalf. He commanded creation to obey him, forbade them to disobey him, and commanded them to refrain from whatever he forbade them. Allah Most High said:

“Whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it.” [al-Hashr
