910—Abu al-Qāsim Abd Allah ibn Muhammad al-Atashī narrated to us: al-Abbās ibn Abd Allah al-Tarqufī narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī narrated to us: Qays narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from al-Minhāl ibn Amr, from Saīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbās, regarding the words of the Most High, “Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance” [al-Baqarah: 37]. He said: “My Lord, did You not create me with Your hand?” He replied, “Indeed.” Adam said, “My Lord, did You not breathe into me of Your spirit?” He replied, “Indeed.” Adam said, “My Lord, did Your mercy toward me not precede Your wrath?” He replied, “Indeed.” Adam said, “My Lord, did You not settle me in Your Paradise?” He replied, “Indeed.” Adam said, “My Lord, tell me: if I repent and mend my ways, will You return me to Paradise?” He replied, “Yes.”
