12 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Aḥmad ibn al-ʿAbbās al-Namirī narrated to me, saying: Yūnus ibn Muḥammad al-Makkī narrated to me:
A man from the people of Ṭāʾif sowed a field, and when it reached maturity a blight struck it and the whole crop was burned. We went in to visit him and offer our condolences; he wept and said, “By Allah, it is not the loss itself that makes me cry. Rather, I heard Allah—majestic and exalted—say: ‘Like a wind in which there is a biting frost that strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves and destroys it’ (Āl ʿImrān 3:117). I am afraid I may be of those so described, and that is what brings me to tears.”
